Materials and Alloy Specifications

Maybrey Precision Castings works in a wide range of ferrous and non-ferrous alloys, covering sand casting, gravity die casting, and 3D printed sand mould applications. The specifications below detail the grades and standards we routinely produce to. Where a specific grade is not listed, contact us: we can often accommodate additional alloys on request.

Heat treatment and annealing are available across most alloy families. Full material certifications and test reports are provided with aerospace and quality-critical work as standard.

Aluminium Alloys

Aluminium is the most versatile of the materials we work in, suitable for sand casting, gravity die casting, and 3D printed sand mould applications. Its combination of low weight, good corrosion resistance, and the ability to achieve superior mechanical properties through heat treatment makes it the material of choice across aerospace, commercial, and architectural applications.

Process Available grades and standards
Sand casting LM Series (LM2, LM4, LM5, LM6, LM9, LM24, LM25, LM27 and others); BSL Aerospace grades (2L99, BSL169, A356, A357, BSL119, RR350 and others); EN AC Series; AFNOR standards; DIN SPEC grades. Specific grade availability confirmed at quotation.
Gravity die casting Full range of commercial grades through class one aerospace-specification aluminium. LM25, LM6, 2L99, LM27 and other grades frequently poured. Additional alloys on request.
Post-casting treatment Solution treatment, artificial ageing (T6 condition), annealing, and stress relief available in-house for all aluminium alloy grades.

Cast Iron

Iron castings remain the largest part of our production by weight. We produce grey iron, ductile iron, high-silicon, nickel, and chrome irons by sand casting, covering applications from general commercial engineering through to heritage restoration and structural work.

Grey Cast Iron

Grey cast iron is the most widely used casting material in general engineering. Its excellent machinability, good vibration damping, and cost-effectiveness make it well suited to a broad range of commercial and heritage applications.

Process Available grades and standards
Sand casting BS1452 Grades 10, 12, 13, 14, 16, 17, 20, 23, and 26. Grade selection depends on required tensile strength, section thickness, and application. Guidance on grade selection is available on request.

Ductile Iron (SG Iron)

Ductile iron, also known as spheroidal graphite (SG) iron, offers significantly higher tensile strength and impact resistance than grey iron, while retaining good machinability. It is the preferred choice for load-bearing structural components and applications where fatigue resistance matters.

Process Available grades and standards
Sand casting BS EN 1563 Grades 900/2, 800/2, 700/3, 600/3, 500/7, 450/10, 420/12, 400/18, and 350/22. Grade 500/7 is the most commonly specified for general structural applications; higher strength grades are available for demanding applications.

High-Silicon Iron

High-silicon irons offer exceptional corrosion resistance, particularly in acid environments. They are used in chemical processing, pump components, and other applications where standard irons would be inadequate.

Sand casting Grades Si 10, Si 14, Si CR 14/4, and Si 16.

Nickel and Chrome Irons

Nickel and chrome irons provide enhanced hardness, wear resistance, and elevated-temperature performance. Applications include wear-resistant liners, grinding media, and components operating in high-temperature or abrasive environments.

Copper-Based Alloys

Copper-based alloys combine corrosion resistance, aesthetic warmth, and in the case of silicon bronze, exceptional weldability. They are used across architectural restoration, art casting, marine hardware, and general engineering applications where appearance and durability both matter.

Process Available grades and standards
Sand casting Aluminium bronze: High strength and excellent corrosion resistance, used in marine and engineering applications.
Sand casting Lead gun metals (LG2, LG4): The standard material for general-purpose bronze castings, offering good corrosion resistance and machinability.
Sand casting Silicon bronze: The material of choice for monumental sculpture and architectural bronze work. Exceptional weldability, warm colour, and long-term patina stability.
Sand casting Phosphor bronze: Good strength, corrosion resistance, and wear properties. Used in bearing applications and engineering components.
Sand casting Other copper-based alloys available on request.
